Ammar bin Yasir

The struggle of Islam and the Muslims in the early days of its emergence was very difficult and full of challenges. They (the Messenger of Allah and his companions) had to be willing to experience various kinds of tests and torture in order to maintain the faith they had achieved. One of the friends who received very severe torture was Ammar bin Yasir, his father, mother Sumayah and younger brother Abdullah who were among the first to embrace Islam (assabiqunal awwalun).

Even his father and mother had to die as a result of the torture they experienced. It is said that one day the Prophet passed in front of Yasir's family who were being tortured by the Quraysh, then the Messenger said:

«صبراً يا آل ياسر، صبراً يا آل ياسر؛ فإنَّ موعدكم الجنة»

"Be patient, O Yasir family, be patient, because the promise for you is heaven"

After being tortured with inhumane torture, namely by having hot stones crushed in the middle of the desert, Sumayah was told to return to shirk, but he refused firmly, this made Abu Jahl very angry, so he took an iron and stabbed it into his anus which made him lost his life. So she became the first woman to die as a martyr in Islam.

Meanwhile, Ammar was continuously tortured and forced to utter sentences of disbelief, namely denouncing the Messenger and praising the god of the polytheists. And because of the severity of the torture he received, he unconsciously said what the Quraysh asked him to do. After he was freed from the torment, he went to the Prophet and told him what he had done while crying over his actions, then the Prophet asked "What have you said?", Ammar answered, "I have said something bad", the Prophet asked, "Then What about the condition of your own heart?" Ammar answered, "My heart still has faith, O Rasulallah." The Prophet said, "If they torture you again and ask you to say it again, then repeat it."

The Prophet reassured Ammar that what he said would have no effect before Allah, because he was forced to say it. The Prophet even told him to repeat it so that he would not be tortured, because his words did not affect his faith in the slightest. Thus, when Ammar first embraced Islam, the trials he had to face were really tough, but all of this will be a witness in the afterlife before Allah so that it will protect him from Allah's punishment. Some time later, Abu Bakr freed him from slavery by buying him.

After the Muslims were ordered to emigrate to Yathrib, Ammar also emigrated. When the Prophet and the Muslims worked together to build the Nabawi mosque, Ammar also helped by bringing stones. Seeing this, the Prophet said,

"The evildoers will one day kill you"

And it turns out that what the Prophet said actually happened, after the Prophet died and leadership was assumed by the Rashidun khulafaur. And during Ali bin Abi Talib's caliphate, an event occurred that the Muslims did not expect, namely a split and dispute between two groups of Muslims, namely the Ali group and the Muawiyah group. Meanwhile, Ammar sided with Ali and defended him when the shiffin war broke out. In this war, Ammar was killed as a martyr defending the truth. So this is what the Prophet said, and with it we can see clearly who the group the Prophet was referring to is. One of the historical witnesses of the struggle for Islam died in its early days. A figure who always adheres to the truth and defends what is right even if his life is at stake. It is with people like this that Allah wins and elevates his word, namely the chosen people, and the best in their time.
