The Story of Umar ibn al-Khattab and the Milk-Selling Girl

From Abdullah ibn Zubair ibn Aslam, from his father, from his grandfather Aslam, he said:

“One night I was accompanying Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was patrolling in Madinah. When he felt tired, he leaned against a wall in the middle of the night. Then he heard a woman saying to her daughter, ‘My daughter, mix this milk with water.’

The daughter replied, ‘O mother, have you not heard the announcement of the Commander of the Faithful today?’
Her mother asked, ‘What announcement, my daughter?’
The girl said, ‘He ordered the officials to proclaim that milk should not be mixed with water.’

The mother said, ‘My daughter, just do it—mix the milk with water! We are in a place where neither Umar nor Umar’s officials can see us.’

But the girl replied to her mother, ‘Mother, it is not proper for me to obey him in public yet disobey him in secret.’

Meanwhile, Umar heard the entire conversation. Then he said, ‘Aslam, mark the door of this house and take note of this place.’ Then Umar quickly continued his patrol.

The next morning Umar said, ‘Aslam, go to that place, find out who that woman was, and to whom she was speaking. Are either of them married?’

I went there and found out that the girl was unmarried and the one speaking to her was her mother, who was also unmarried. I returned to Umar and informed him. Then Umar called his sons and gathered them. Umar said, ‘Which one of you wishes to get married?’

‘Father, I am not yet married, marry me!’ Ashim replied. So Umar proposed to the girl and married her to Ashim.

From this marriage was born a daughter, who later became the mother of Umar ibn Abdul Aziz.”
